Tila Tequila (legally known as Tila Nguyen) was born in Singapore on October 24th 1981. She is, among other things, a model, entertainer and performing artist. Nguyen currently lives in the West Hollywood area.
Childhood
Following Nguyen’s birth in Singapore, the family left for Vietnam, where a controversial war had just ended. As a one year old, Nguyen and family once again relocated to a community in Houston, Texas. She and her family lived in the area only to move a final time – to a community managed by a Buddhist temple.
When Nguyen entered intermediate school, numerous problems began to arise. Her tom-boyish attitude left her embroiled in numerous school conflicts. As behavioral problems continued to pile, Nguyen’s parents decided it was time to ship their daughter to boarding school. When she returned and subsequently entered high school, problems once again resurfaced.
Nguyen pilfered her sister’s ID card and became a regular at numerous nightclubs, where she purportedly engaged in illegal drug use. One thing lead to another, and Tila joined a gang. Her gang affiliation was severed when some friends allegedly helped put her life back together. At sixteen, Tila’s gang involvement caught up to her, and thus she decided to move to New York.
Career as a Model/Actress
Nguyen landed her first modeling gig when she was spotted by a Playboy scout in a Houston mall. Nguyen ended up moving to Southern California, and subsequently become the first Asian girl to be Playboy’s Cyber Girl of the Month.
Tila has had numerous other acting stints with VH1, FuseTV, and NBC.
A Shot at Love
In March of 2007, Nguyen announced the start of filming for her own reality show, entitled A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila. The show was initially intended to air on VH1, but instead aired on MTV.
In October of 2007, A Shot at Love premiered on MTV. Viewers were introduced to two groups of men and women, each allegedly chasing Tila’s heart. The contestants were initially unaware of Nguyen’s bisexual orientation.
Tila’s Website
Tila Tequila launched her own website in 2001, appropriately titled “Tila’s Hot Spot”. The site initially contained news and other information about Nguyen, including a members only section (which included adult content). The site was later renovated as was the content. The site is now focused on excelling Nguyen’s career.
Tila started an unrelated online venture in 2005 that was to be used to market her fashion line (Tilafashion.com). Tequila also started another site in 2006, meant to provide Myspace users with layouts, images and other media.
Tila’s Dabblings in Music
Nguyen used her acting success to pursue her interest in music. At age twenty, she attempted to join a band with no avail. Determined, she created a new band known as Beyond Betty Jean. She acted as both a vocalist and writer for the band. The band is now defunct. Tila is currently a band member of online sensation Jealousy.
Tila signed a recording contract with Will.I.Am in April of 2006. Despite this, she decided to release her first single, titled “I Love U,” independently. Nearly one day after its release, the song became the most downloaded song on iTunes. Tila released an album under a new record label in July of 2007. Shortly following the album’s release, Nguyen was sued by the label for a breach of contract.
